About the Centre
The Prion Centre Building
The CPPFD institute occupies three floors of the Brain and Aging Research Building (former Environmental Engineering Building) in the centre of the main University of Alberta campus. With a design team from the architectural firms of Smith-Carter, Winnipeg (specializing in biocontainment laboratories) and from Rockliff-Pierzchajlo, Edmonton, renovations commenced in January 2007.
The newly refurbished areas are serviced by dedicated, energy-efficient heating and ventilation systems, and comprise over 27,000 square feet of customized laboratory space. In addition to six laboratory areas, communal areas with analytical instrumentation are designated for biocontainment use. These communal areas are physically contiguous with suites for biochemistry wet-lab activity, transgenesis and histopathology, thus providing superior logistics for day-to-day operations.
